Back to School
Slow mornings and long summer nights are wrapping up. For some of you, the first week of August means back to the routine grind. A little planning and preparation now means less morning chaos later.
Here are some ways to ease in with more calm and connection this year along with supportive products and recipes.
Back-to-School Support for the Kids
Establish a consistent bedtime.
Ease back into the school routine by shifting bedtimes 10–15 minutes earlier each night until your child is getting the recommended amount of sleep—9–12 hours for young children and 8–10 hours for teens. Adequate sleep supports a healthy immune system, better focus and school performance, sharper memory, and improved mood and mental health.
Build a steady rhythm.
Kids thrive on a predictable routine. Rather than following a rigid schedule, create a rhythm—a flexible, familiar flow that leaves room for the unexpected, because there's always something!
A few simple ways to create consistency:
Aim for the same wake-up time each day and follow the same morning routine: get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth, and head out the door.
Create a calming bedtime routine with familiar steps like a bath or shower followed by a bedtime story.
Prep clothes, lunches, and backpacks the night before to make busy mornings run smoother.
Build in 10–15 minutes of quiet time after school to help kids decompress before jumping into homework, sports, or other activities. This small buffer can make the transition home much smoother and often helps prevent those after-school meltdowns that happen when everyone is running on empty.
Provide nourishing meals and snacks.
Nutrition plays a big role in energy, focus, and learning throughout the school day.
Start the day with a balanced breakfast that includes protein, healthy fats, fiber-rich carbohydrates, and fruit to help keep blood sugar steady and kids feeling full longer.
Limit ultra-processed foods and added sugars when possible.
Lay out a few healthy options and let kids help pack their own lunches and snacks—they're more likely to eat what they choose.
Snack ideas: fresh fruit, homemade trail mix with seeds and dried berries, plain yogurt with berries and honey, carrot sticks or cucumber with hummus, string cheese, or a simple cheese sandwich.
Lunch ideas: grilled chicken, turkey or ham, chicken salad, a chicken or beef quesadilla, cheese and crackers, chickpea pasta or macaroni, bone broth rice, fresh vegetables, and fruit.
Help them navigate big feelings.
Back-to-school anxiety is common. Encourage your child to talk about how they're feeling, and reassure them that it's normal to feel excited, nervous, or a little of both about a new school year.
Practice simple calming techniques together, like taking five slow belly breaths or trying a simple mindfulness exercise, such as the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique (name five things they can see, four they can touch, three they can hear, two they can smell, and one they can taste). If anxiety begins affecting sleep, school, friendships, or everyday life, reach out to your pediatrician or a licensed mental health professional for additional support.
Limit screens, prioritize movement.
Aim for two hours or less of recreational screen time.
Keep bedrooms screen-free to protect their sleep.
Set limits on phones, tablets, and iPads, encourage reading, outdoor play, and family time instead.
Be a role model by managing your own screen time too.
Back-to-School Support for Parents
Back-to-school season is just as demanding for parents as it is for kids. Between earlier mornings, packed schedules, and everyone’s emotions running high, it’s easy to put ourselves last. By taking care of ourselves, we can show up with more patience, energy, and resilience for the people we love.
Claim your mornings first.
Go to sleep a little earlier and wake before your kids to create a 15-minute screen-free buffer that’s actually yours. Use that time for whatever fills your cup—sip your coffee or matcha, stretch, read, sit in silence, journal, or simply take a few deep breaths before the chaos starts.
Set boundaries before the season gets busy.
We can’t do it all, and back-to-school is often when overcommitting catches up with us. Decide ahead of time what you’re saying yes to this fall—volunteering, carpools, activities—and what you’re letting go of.
Simplify your own meals, too.
Put the same thought and care into your own meals that you put into your kids'. Make healthy meals easier with strategies like meal prepping, batch-cooking, keeping a list of easy go-to meals, or using a prepared meal service on the nights when you’re stretched thin.
Move your body daily.
Don’t leave movement to chance—put your workout, walk, or time to move on the calendar the same way you’d schedule a meeting.
A workout, a walk, tennis, stretching, or anything that gets you out of your head and back into your body counts. Consistent movement supports your energy, mood, and ability to show up for yourself and your family.
Schedule "me time."
We can’t pour from an empty cup. Schedule 5–10 minutes each day that are just for you—a few deep breaths, a sauna session, reading, listening to a podcast, a short walk, or simply a quiet moment to reset.
These small moments aren’t indulgent; they’re what help us recharge so we can show up with more patience, energy, and presence for the people who need us.

My kids eat lunch in the school cafeteria now, but I still use these lunchboxes all the time for camp, road trips, picnics, and snacks. 3. Olawala Kids Free-Sip Water Bottles
Our favorite water bottles that my kids use every day. They're easy for little hands to carry, leak-proof, and the insulated stainless steel keeps water cold all day long. The spout is what sets this apart—you can sip upright through the built-in straw or tilt the bottle back to drink from the wide-mouth opening, making it easy for kids to use however they prefer.
4. Hiya Health
One of our favorite kids' supplement brands that my kids are genuinely crazy about. They think the multivitamin tastes like candy and are excited to start each morning with Hiya's daily multivitamin and probiotic, and often their new protein powder too. We also love their electrolytes in water and their greens powder which makes a delicious hot chocolate or chocolate milk they'll happily drink.
Every product is made with high-quality ingredients, free from unnecessary additives, and thoughtfully formulated to support growing kids through every stage.
5. PackIt Freezable Snack Box
A snack-packing essential. PackIt's freezable bags have built-in gel walls that keep food cold for hours—no separate ice packs needed. Just fold the bag flat, store it in the freezer overnight, and it's ready to keep snacks and drinks chilled all day. They're lightweight, easy to clean, and perfect for school, camp, road trips, and travel.
6. Kids Fatty15
Another simple way to support kids’ wellness with this essential fatty acid supplement that most people don’t get enough of through diet alone. I take the adult version of this.

11. Muracha Essentials Set
For the past few months, I've swapped my morning coffee ritual for matcha, and I feel amazing. If you're a coffee drinker and aren't ready to swap, try adding matcha as a mid-morning or afternoon pick-me-up instead. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine provides a smoother, more balanced energy boost without the jitters. It leaves me feeling energized, focused, and steady throughout the day.
I'm currently loving Muracha, founded by Atlanta sisters Megan Lore and Katie Roth. You may remember Megan from Hungry Girls Do It Better and Social Club before recently launching Muracha—a brand created around quality, transparency, and the ritual of making matcha at home.
Their debut, Yame No. 89, is a first-harvest, single-cultivar matcha sourced directly from a family-run farm in Yame, Japan. The tea is shade-grown to naturally increase L-theanine and chlorophyll, then traditionally stone-milled in Japan for exceptional flavor, freshness, and vibrant color. The result is a beautifully smooth, naturally sweet matcha with a rich umami flavor that I'm obsessed with. It’s become a daily ritual I look forward to every morning.
12. The Paradoxes of Parenting by Peyten Williams
A new book I've added to my reading list from Atlanta author, Peyten Williams, who shares thoughtful parenting insights and practical advice for navigating the many challenges and joys of raising children. Back-to-school is the perfect time to reset routines and reflect on our parenting approach. I'm excited to dive into this book for parenting advice and guidance as we head into a new school year.
